AI wheels falling off? Microslop – can not help it! This is not about Microsoft, Microsofts; CEO Sataya just happened to make a statement last week, which was not well received for well founded reasons!
Personal opinion piece
I don’t know what everyones take on the current hype around AI or Artificial Intelligence is but I thought it was about time that I made my thoughts known because to a lot of people there is a real lack of what AI is and what it can do, whether you read what the “hype’sters” say (Open Ai, Microsoft, Google etc) or the people who are claiming we are in the middle of a bubble that can only do one thing! (that is to POP).
The current hype around AI is in relation to Large Language models and that is where the bulk of investments from the companies above have been made, you know the type, you can ask question and you get an answer back; the answer may be right or it may be wrong (hallucination’s – a nice way of saying “no flaming idea what the answer is anyway, I guessed”), Googles first response to anything you ask today is a Large Language model reply, which will be wrong as long as there are multiple steps, but it will be close and the rest of the google results now are enshittified bullshit advertising (Sorry I digress!).
You have also seen it with Facebook, the prompts under every single post “do you want to know more about xyzzy” links to Metas Large Language Model Llama to give you an answer (which might be right or wrong).
At every turn you are being pushed towards using AI to be your daily assistant yet the value it adds is questionable, firstly, it is just as likely tp be wrong as it is to be right. An LLM works by guessing the next most likely word as an outpost based on your question – if the question you ask is uncommon or has many different answers then your results are going to be varied and different every time – yes, every time you ask the same question of an LLM the answer changes, so its not even useful for proving you are right and someone else is wrong!
The reason you are being pushed to use AI for everything is that there is currently in the order or trillions of dollars tied up with investments in AI technology companies, Microslop (Microsoft) is the latest to have their CEO ask people to be “kind” to AI, that’s because Microslop ‘lost” 12 billion in the last quarter alone helping to prop up Open AI as a lead AI tech company who doesn’t know how to make money from the technology they “birthed” (Large Language Models not AI, AI has been around for a Lon long time!).
There is also Cartel of big tech companies, a big circle jerk of AI all paying one another to keep the wheels on the Investment train, because one thing is certain and that is that these wheels are going to fall off in the next 12 months, there will be a few winners (Fat cat investors) and many losers (You and I, small time investors).
What can AI (Large Language Models) do? well it can help create stupid short videos, can build slop stories, can summarise long documents (would you trust something that is not correct each time?), create images – none of these capabilities are multi trillion $$$ hits and this is not going to keep the companies sell AI afloat.
Short term, there are some really cool use cases not LLMS! helping blind people ‘see’ in a room by understanding the objects that a computer ‘sees’, as well as many other use cases, again none of these come close to the trillions of dollars currently invested, which must make a return for the companies up to their eye balls in AI!>……
Noticed that your Windows 11 desktop keeps changing the icons and application names to “Microsoft Copilot”? that’s because Microslop has no choice anymore but to drive adoption.
You can save yourself by:
Public service announcement: if you purchase Microsoft office for home, and you have a renewal, say no you don’t want to renew and the price will decrease as they “remove” the copilot add-in to your office subscription.
