Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) – hype and Marketecture, the latest Enshittification lever for internet search and content and the reason that the big tech bro companies have been growing for the last 3 years.

But, now that every software product on the market has been “drizzled” with a bit of AI marketecture pazazz, every mega hyperscaler and every evil social media overlord has invested massive amounts of $$$$ to build the infrastructure ready for AGI, which is of course imminent in the next 18 months (2 years ago) the signs are become more evident that the bubble is ready to burst.
The hype for AI like every tech bubble in my 30 years of IT will be muted shortly ready for the next hype bubble that builds and loses investor money (our investment dollars that large corporates invest on our behalf from retirements funds to ETFs).
Just as every previous bubble, there will be a few winners and a lot of losers, AI tech is not new, wasn’t new 3 years ago with the launch of Chat GPTs Large Language Model, and won’t go away when the bubble bursts either.
When I look at the market and who makes money from this, it’s not the big players, it is a few of the start ups like Open AI that will be propelled into the status of a mega company. Others like Meta and Google who provide an AI summary or service without a way to recoup the costs are not going to continue offering what they offer without major changes.
Free is not a word that exists in mega corporations and the AI services that are being offered today do not return any revenue vs the cost of infrastructure and computer, enshittification will follow shortly or a complete return to a non AI summarised Facebook feed, I mean ‘why’ do I want to know more about a lobster habitat or why cooked lobster goes red when I read a post about the 2025 lobster season starting!
AGI is not coming anytime soon, at least from the point of a system learning based on stimulation, learning and then being able to out think all humanity.
Generative AI is a curious party trick that will remain and grow to be a strong player in helping various organisations and people with tasks by saving time writing, helping speed up time to research and providing general assistance to daily tasks, but it won’t remain free and it will not take away many jobs from citizens globally, the “headlines” from major companies saying that AI means they can “optimise” their staff (reduce) does not mean this, it means that reductions need to happen and either a reason makes it more palatable to the market, or it’s an AI company and the announcement is the same as above with the added “see we use AI now”, because of share price.

The article I linked below is only one of many and triggered me to write this, my wish is that humanity learns to use their common sense and stop following hype trains every time they appear (at least every 5 years), the people who make money here are not you or I, they are the people already invested in the next hype cycle today, the ones normos don’t even know about.
If you do invest, then have a strategy and get out when your returns have been made, don’t hold on because of all the bubble companies, only a few will remain.
